Royal Babies: “Catherine is the kind of mother you can identify with”

Share

As Meghan’s due date fast approaches we thought we’d highlight our favourite shows on True Royalty TV about growing up a Royal. Our first pick is the aptly titled Royal Babies.

When it comes to rearing Royals, times have changed somewhat since the days when the Queen had her three sons and daughter. This was still very much a time when children were to be seen but not heard and a team of nannies did most of the work. In the 21st century, however, things are somewhat different.

Royal Correspondent Camilla Tominey notes in Royal Babies that the Duchess of Cambridge has managed to embrace being a modern mother and disregard these previous archaic traditions. “She’s very in touch with the masses,” Tominey says “she’s the kind of mother you can identify with.”

And perhaps part of this relatability is down to the fact she isn’t Royal by birth. While Kate grew up in a privileged middle class household, it was still miles away from the Royal way of life. Her firstborn, Prince George, the third in line to the throne, has the advantage of sharing this bond to the ordinary with his mother.

Tominey notes that this background for George is useful as “he’s half Royal, half commoner which is probably a good thing for the monarchy going forward because we’re living in very modern times and a lot of the pomp and traditions of yesteryear seem very outdated.”

It would be remiss, however, not to mention Princess Diana when looking at hte changing approach to motherhood as a Royal.

Royal Fashion Historian, James Sherwood, highlights the importance of the cultural icon who, he says, ‘‘was probably the first Royal mother that you saw. She continued to make state visits while pregnant and was visible.’

With this template of no nonsense Royal mothers to we hope Meghan has plenty of guidance when she gives birth to the newest member of the Royal Family in the spring.
