Royal Upstairs Downstairs: Hosting Queen Victoria

This week’s pick from author of ‘The World of Downton Abbey’ Jessica Fellowes is a topic she is a bit of an expert on: Royal Upstairs Downstairs.

This series focusses on all the grand houses that a young Victoria visited and where she was honoured with elaborate dinners and luxurious comfort by those seeking to curry favour with the future queen.

The first in the series looks at Chatsworth House which is a stately home in Derbyshire and owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, having been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family.

Fellowes says, ‘What I really like is when they go below stairs… it’s a real under the skin look of a house at that time’
