Pick of the Week – George and Mary: The First Windsors

Nigel Brown

In this week’s pick, BAFTA-winning filmmaker, Nick Bullen, explains why this documentary about the founders of the most famous family on earth is a must watch for any Royal fan.

When Albert married Victoria in 1840 the pair took his surname, Saxe-Coburg und Gotha. As did both his son Edward VII and grandson George VI. When war broke out against the Germans in 1914, however, George and his advisors realised it was time for a rebrand which they did to great success.

Windsor, a quintessentially British name if ever there was one, was a masterstroke and marked the first step towards a modern British monarchy that is still adored by the public to this day.
