“I am the bubbly smiler but behind my smiles I have been frightened and hurting”

“There’s nothing better than being able to share your experiences, and ask for advice from someone who has actually been through it, rather than a complete stranger or someone who doesn’t actually get what you’ve been through.” Prince Harry

Talking is the first step

World Mental Health Day (10th October) is a day for global mental health education and awareness against social stigma. First celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization with members and contacts in more than 150 countries, the day is now recognized across the globe and is the most important day in the mental health calendar.

On True Royalty Magazine we wanted to celebrate and highlight a charity that is making a huge impact with mental health and hopes to extend that work across the world. As many of our subscribers are mothers, we felt this cause was something extremely close to the hearts of our True Royalty community and we felt compelled to spread the word of the great work that Best Beginnings is undertaking in the UK, helping young women and mother’s get the help they need when dealing with the complexities of carrying a child and giving birth.

Helping Mum and baby have the best start – no matter what your circumstance

Since it launched in 2007, Best Beginnings has supported over two million families with its big vision to ensure all children have the best start in life, no matter what background. It focuses its work on empowering parents through the creation and distribution of informative content in the form of films, magazines and most notably, their award winning free phone app Baby Buddy – a personable guide for inexperienced mothers from pre-conception until six months after giving birth. Any Mum, no matter what background has access to these tools, and it’s something CEO, Alison Baum is justifiably proud of.

“We are enormously grateful to True Royalty TV for choosing to support Best Beginnings and for actively encouraging their community of royal fans to do the same. Confident and supported parenting in the early months and years is key to improving the life chances of children from all backgrounds. Together we can increase Best Beginnings reach and impact and make a difference for future generations.”

The Baby Buddy App: a helpful resource

Whilst the Baby Buddy phone app is only available in the UK, Best Beginnings web version of Baby Buddy can be used anywhere in the world.

One of the best insights and resources for mothers are the first hand accounts from women about their own experiences. In a recent post by guest blogger Jill Fyfe, she spoke about how she wished she had access to resources like the Baby Buddy app.

“I really do wish that Best Beginnings had been around for me when I was becoming a mother,” says Jilly. “ I am a mother of three that has suffered from mental ill-health silently for about 13 years, which is hard to admit. I am the bubbly smiler but behind my smiles I have been frightened and hurting. The FREE ‘Baby Buddy’ app created by Best Beginnings could have helped me immensely.”

As a user of Baby Buddy said, ”I’m so sad it’s over – this app has been with me for a year, it actually felt like a friend! Thank you everyone at Baby Buddy, you’ve kept me company at some of the loneliest and confusing times and I’ll miss this app tremendously.”

“I felt so alone in Portugal and my husband was always working away. I had no family to confide in. The app could have told me how my baby was developing and all those big scary words that get thrown at me, I could have searched for them in the app and found their meaning without feeling embarrassed.”

In their first decade as a charity Best Beginnings has reached almost t million families. In order to help them continue to do their work True Royalty has made a donation this World Mental Health Day, and we would love our community of royal fans to do the same.

In the words of Diana, the ‘People’s Princess’:

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”
